In a situation where obesity is recognized as one of the most important chronic diseases of the current century and has widespread consequences on individual and social health, the domestic production of obesity treatment drug by an Iranian knowledge-based company, at a price much lower than foreign samples, has created new hope for patients and the country's health system.
According to the Public Relations Department of Radio Salamat, Dr. Alireza Satqamti, a faculty member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, emphasized the importance of scientific treatment for obesity in the “Salam Bar Zindi” program and said: Obesity is a chronic disease, not a cosmetic issue. When we talk about obesity, we mean people with a body mass index above 30 who are at serious risk of developing diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, gallstones, sleep disorders, and even an increased risk of developing more than 15 types of cancer.
Referring to the domestic production of a drug to treat obesity, he added: “Thanks to the efforts of researchers at an Iranian knowledge-based company, an effective drug to treat obesity has been produced that is available at one-fifth the price of similar foreign drugs.”
Satqamti continued: “This drug is not only effective in reducing weight by 20 to 25 percent, but it can also reduce the three-month blood sugar level of diabetic patients by more than two percent.”
He warned against the misuse of this drug and stated: “This drug should only be prescribed by a specialist doctor. Its use in beauty centers is completely unscientific and dangerous. We do not recommend this drug to people who are slightly overweight or simply dissatisfied with their appearance. This drug is designed to treat obesity, not for beauty.”
The faculty member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences also stated: “People with diabetes, those with sleep disorders, and those with sleep apnea are among the groups for whom this drug is recommended.” These recommendations are based on scientific studies and clinical experiences.
He noted: This drug should not be prescribed in one of the rare thyroid tumors and a hereditary disease, and apart from these two cases, there are no contraindications for its administration. This drug can be used in the elderly, but it is contraindicated for children.
